Do you recall, as a small child, being taught the Guardian Angel prayer?
Angel of God,
my guardian dear,
to whom God’s love commits me here,
ever this day be at my side,
to light and guard, to rule and guide.
Amen.
I remember saying this prayer every night before sleep, repeating it with a kind of sing-song cadence, as children do. Last month we celebrated Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael but we often forget our own guardian angels who diligently stay by our side, guiding and protecting us. At times, I have probably inspired mine to find another job other than guiding me!
Pius VI granted a partial indulgence every time this prayer was said with a contrite heart and devotion, and while I don’t believe this, I do believe that the Lord is pleased with our heartfelt gratitude when we acknowledge and honour our angels who watch over us.
October 2 is the Feast Day for our Holy Guardian Angels. Our Holy Guardian Angels may be the gentle inspiration that prompt us to assist that elderly neighbour, or to help a young family out with a meal knowing that money is tight in our cost-of-living crisis. Our guardian angels may also be our inspiration to say loving and supportive things to others who need a compassionate or understanding presence.
Mother Mary Potter often referred to the angels in her writings. Taking her motivation perhaps from Our Lady’s early experiences with the angels.
This quote from Hebrews 13:2 “…and remember always to welcome strangers, for by doing this, some people have entertained angels without knowing it,” is a timely reminder for us in our very troubled world to be the hands of the angels to help others.
We exist at a time where religious, geopolitical and gender conflict is worryingly present. And while we debate, the most vulnerable in our communities continue to suffer from a lack of resources, food or support. If we have nothing to give, we still have prayer, and that can be a gift that has impact.
Mother Mary Potter always advocated for the prioritising of meeting the needs of the vulnerable over hers and the Sisters’ own. In their own way, the Sisters have been earthly angels to many across the globe. For the month of October, I encourage you to welcome the strangers, as Mary Potter and her Sisters did, and still do. Move out of the safety of your comfort zone and trust that your angels will guide you.
Angel sent by God to guide me,
be my light and walk beside me,
be my guardian and protect me,
on the paths of life, direct me.
Amen
