August, the final month of winter brings optimism of warmer and brighter days. A sense of hope, energy, excitement as the season starts to change. A spring in our step!
August 31st is Social Justice Sunday. It is a time to reflect on how our faith calls us to promote justice, dignity and care for all people. The end of winter and new spring may energise us further for those affected by social injustice.
Each year the Australian Bishop’s Conference releases a Social Justice Statement. (Access the link below).
The statement for 2024-2025 is titled “Truth and Peace: A Gospel Word in a Violent World.” The statement focuses on promoting peace and truth in public life. It recognises the rising global tensions and misinformation, encouraging the need for dialogue, truth-telling and practical action in order to build peace.

Venerable Mary Potter was devoted to and worked for justice for all; in particular, those who were marginalised, suffering and dying. Though she suffered from poor health and numerous obstacles, Mary Potter founded the Little Company of Mary to bring a healing presence to those who suffer.
How would Mary Potter act if she were here today?
Mary Potter’s life mirrored the social justice principles highlighted on Social Justice Sunday; human dignity, advocacy and support for those who are marginalised and suffering.
I turn the television on, and I am confronted with the war in Gaza, Ukraine and other parts of the world. Violence also seems to be increasing in Australia. It is possible to feel almost immune to the suffering we see because there is so much of it, or we avoid watching it.
The bishop’s statement encourages Catholics and others to build peace via truth-telling and practical action.
I pray, and prayer is powerful and vital, but I ask myself can I do more? Can we do more?
Prayer for Peace—St. John Paul II
Lord Jesus Christ, who are called the Prince of Peace,
who are Yourself our peace and reconciliation,
who so often said, “Peace to you” – please grant us peace.
Make all men and women witnesses of truth, justice and brotherly love.
Banish from their hearts whatever might endanger peace.
Enlighten our rulers that they may guarantee and defend the great gift of peace.
May all peoples on the earth become as brothers and sisters.
May longed-for peace blossom forth and reign always over us all. Amen.
